Another fun week of Spanish in the books. The big news in class this week was the addition of two hamsters (Jamon y Queso). It’s amazing to me how much kids are drawn to and connect with animals. I got the hamsters because my own daughters were so insistent that I have class pets and I finally caved. I held out because I couldn’t see how I would tie it into the curriculum and I wanted to make sure that I’d be able to properly care for them. I also didn’t want the pets to distract from what I want the students to learn during the limited time that we have together. So far, I’m very happy with the decision to bring the little guys on board. They have not distracted from class productivity and have added opportunities for discussions in Spanish. I let the students walk by and say hi when they come into the classroom if they’d like to before heading to their seats but they are not allowed to hold them unless they come in before school between 7:45-8am. It has been rewarding to watch so many kids get so excited to care for these little guys.
