OPA Early Literacy
Early Literacy is a measure of students’ reading in the early elementary grades. Reading on grade level by the end of third grade is a strong predictor of future academic success.
“Reading on grade level” represents the students who are meeting or exceeding expected reading levels as measured by Lexiles on the Acadience Reading Benchmark Assessment. Lexile levels are used to predict future scoring on RISE assessments (given in grades 3 and up) since the correlation is stronger than using Acadience benchmark status.

Literacy Milestones
Literacy milestones are key stages in a child’s development as they learn to read and write. These milestones mark important skills and concepts that students understand at specific ages or grade levels. Click here to learn more about literacy milestones. Parent Guides
Parents are important partners in achieving the Utah State Board of Education’s vision that “each student is prepared to succeed and lead by having knowledge and skills to learn, en- gage civically, and lead meaningful lives.” The purpose of these Parent Guides is to help parents better understand what their children should learn, when a child may need more help or when a child would benefit from extra challenges.
